The Vulcain Watch Collector Page

Welcome to your online source for information regarding the world famous (Though now it is no more.) Swiss brand Vulcain. This pages is brand new and will evolve over time. At the present time I am looking for people who can provide pictures, factory literature, and other information. You will of course be credited for your work on the site.

To get this project rolling lets start off with the companies history.

The Vulcain company was founded in 1858 by Maurice Ditissheim, under the trade name "Vulcain & Studio SA.", in La Chaux-de-fonds in the Jura district. This is in the western region of Switzerland. The model the company is best known for is the "Cricket". The Cricket was the first mass produced alarm watch and was first introduced in 1947. This model is also known as the "President". This is due to the fact that in the 1950's - 1960's the Swiss Ambassador to the United States would present an example of this watch to the then current president. The first lucky president to receive it was President Eisenhower in 1952. The watch was designed by a French physicist by the name of Paul Langevin, who felt the sound the alarm made sounded like a crickets. Thus the name unusual name Cricket. In about 1958 the Vulcain company was responsible for another first. The introduction of the first alarm watch for ladies called "The Golden Voice.". The name once again was inspired by the sound the alarm made. On this model there was gold alarm membrane which produces a beautiful sound. The same group of designers went on to produced yet another first to the market. In 1961 the company introduced the first waterproof alarm watch dubbed the "Nautical". The Vulcain company had another brand that it made. The name of that brand is Revue Thommen. Vulcain made watches under that name until 1998, when the name was licensed to Grovana. Grovana later bought the brand, and is still the current owner. The company that currently owns Vulcain is PMH SA. They also own the rights to the Cricket alarm movement. This link will take you to the companies current home http://www.vulcain-watches.ch/ where you can view their fine offerings. Here is a link to a news article dating back to 2002 about the present companies plans. http://www.fhs.hk/Archives/vulcain_reborn_en.htm
